How laser engraving works
A laser burns a thin layer off the surface of the wood, leaving your design slightly recessed and darker than the surrounding board. Nothing is added, so there is no ink to fade, peel or come into contact with food. That is why engraving is the standard decoration for cheese boards.
One color by nature
An engraving is always the color of burned wood: dark brown on bamboo, darker brown on acacia or walnut. It cannot match a Pantone color. If your logo depends on color, choose a board that also offers full-color UV printing, or accept a tone-on-tone version of your logo, which most brands find looks more premium on wood anyway.
Sending artwork
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) give the sharpest result. Very thin lines and small text can blur in open-grain woods; some boards list a minimum font size. You will receive a free digital proof showing the logo at actual size on the board before production starts.
Best boards for engraving
Light, tight-grained bamboo gives the most contrast. Acacia gives a subtler, richer result. Browse cheese boards or state-shaped boards to start.
